Trees planted when you recycle old mobile phones
The City of Armadale is joining MobileMuster's Old phones, more trees campaign, in which Landcare Australia plants a tree for every kilogram of old mobile phones that are recycled throughout May until World Environment Day on 5 June.
The campaign has led to 200,000 trees being planted across Australia over the last three years, with a further 30,000 to be planted this year in the Mallee region of WA, along the River Murray and in Queensland's Daintree Rainforest.
To achieve the 2010 goal, MobileMuster, Landcare Australia and the City of Armadale need plenty of help from the local community.
All mobile phone components - from handsets to batteries, chargers and accessories - will be recycled into new products by MobileMuster, according to Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds.
"This keeps potentially toxic battery elements and a lot of plastic out of landfill and recycling them reduces our need for natural resources," Cr Reynolds said.
"MobileMuster reports that seven out of 10 people have at least one unused mobile at home, so this is a great time to do the right thing by the environment and recycle them.
"I would like to challenge City of Armadale residents to clean out their old cupboards and drawers, drop off their old mobiles and accessories to our easy collection point at Armadale Library and contribute a large amount to the recycling effort
"The bonus is that a tree will be planted for every kilogram we collect."
Residents can drop their old mobile phone handsets, batteries, chargers and accessories at the City's Armadale Library or the Drop-n-Shop at Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility.
